as well
as western and oriental. The parapet is inscribed with four characters: propriety, justice, integrity and honor - the four virtues, which gave the house a nickname - the four virtue house.
This Renaissance Baroque style architecture, Zhenhai Chen Family Mansion is the only western-style civilian residence left in Penghu. This house was selected one of the Top 10 Penghu Historic Architecture in 2001. Built in 1926, the facade is formed by seven
serial arches supported by majestic roman columns.
This architecture was designed based on the five-foot-way mansion of the Chen Clan Mansion in Kinmen. The most unique features are arched galleries, straight beams, columns along the walls of the veranda and parapet at second floor and rooftop. The facade
bears
an arched plaque bearing the name of the mansion. Mixed western and oriental elements create an intriguing fusion style. The parapet on the second floor bears four characters, symbolizing the four virtues - propriety, justice, integrity and honor.
Part of
the mansion was altered in an extension project. This chic western building stands out from clusters of lower houses built in the southern Chinese Yinchuan style commonly seen in Penghu.
