Located in the southern north of Wangan Island, Huayu of about 53m tall is the westernmost island of both Penghu and Taiwan.

Despite the topographical similarity with other islands of Penghu, Huayu is geologically different from them. While other islands are mainly composed of basalt, andesite is the main rock type of Huayu. As the oldest island of the Penghus, Huayu was formed about
90 million to 50 million years ago. After prolonged weathering, different rock-scapes have been shaped.

After the tide falls, the left “fairy’s footprint” mentioned in the legend appears on the wave cut reef southeast of Huayu and corresponds to the right foot on Tiantaishan in Wanganyu. There are other rock-scapes on the island, including the couple rock (lovers
rock), stone Guanyin, stone monkey, old man stone, etc.

The Huayu Lighthouse on the top of Huayu is the main local landmark. It was built during Japanese occupation and completed in 1939 for military purposes. This 12.5m tall tower is a white round reinforced steel structure and the westernmost lighthouse in Taiwan.
It is equipped with a fourth order electricity and carbide flash that flashes once every five seconds at 1,600CD.
