Jiangjun Island is a typical basalt platform. It is only one nautical mile, about 5 minutes by boat, from Wang-an Island. It was nicknamed “Little Hong Kong” for its thriving prosperity from mining of coral and Penghu wenshi (veined stone). At its
high point,
small multi-story houses packed the streets of this small fishing village. This is one of the first areas in Penghu to have modern multi-story houses. Many two, three and four-story houses are still standing till today. There is also a community
formed by
numerous old houses in narrow alleys. This community is still serviced by the neighborly old-style grocery stores.
The majority of the residents are fishermen. The old rustic flair of the fishing village and exquisite coral and marine ecology exclusive to Penghu are well preserved by genuine love of the residents for their heritage and homeland.
There are four large temples on this island: Jiangjun Temple (Temple of the General), Yongan Temple, Tianhou Temple (Temple of Heavenly Queen) and Jiangjun Chapel. Tianhou Temple is an exquisite showcase of high craft stone carvings built solely by donations
of the island residents. This temple once set three records of Penghu – the most expensive temple, the fastest construction, and the largest feast.
From Jiangjun Island, the Chuanfan Islet (Sail Islet), a 25-meter-high basalt rock of Lulian Island, is visible from a distance. There is a pergola, a perfect place for daze hours. Lulian Island is a popular gathering place for sea fishing enthusiasts.
