Dinggou Islet, Magong City, Penghu County
In the sea area 1km southeast of Jishan Islet, there is Dinggou Islet, which has four small pieces composed of basalt ledges. Columnar joints in different directions were formed by the lava flows. Later, with the marine erosion and weathering, Mother Nature has carved the rocks of the island into miraculous, exquisite shapes that are worth all praises. Groups of sea stacks were formed owing to the ups and downs of the terrain. When standing among the sea stacks and looking up, one can see the intriguing view of “a line of sky,” which is considered to be something viewable only in Dinggou; no other place in Penghu provides such a sight.
The whole structure of Dinggou Islet is based on black pillar-shaped basalt rocks. Similar to Jishan Islet, nodules of olivine can be easily found in the basalt of the islet. Same as Jishan Islet, there are lavers naturally grown on the ledges of the islet. The collecting operations are under the management of the nearby villages, which usually brings considerable wealth to the villagers.
The islet is reserved and thus less impacted by humans. In summer, nearly a thousand bridled terns come to breed, making the islet the most important habitat for bridled terns in the North Sea of Penghu. Catch a boat to the nearby sea area, and you’ll be able to see a flock of bridled terns flying gracefully!
