Waian, Xiyu Township, Penghu County
Waian Village is located to the south of Xiyu Township and adjacent to Neian Village on the north. It has a natural shield and is less attacked by the northeast monsoon. Hence, the Waian Village is the most populated community in Xiyu Township. This place is most suitable for developing the fishing industry thanks to the terrain, and many residents live on the fishing. Taoism is the mainstream religion here. The Wengwan Temple is the center of religion for Waian villagers. The Wengfu Wan Ye is enshrined in the temple.
The Wengwan Temple is the center of the Lantern Festival. The Qigui, Pinganqiao, and other celebrations are held in front of the Wengwan Temple. Almost one thousand fishing boats gather at the Waian Port to show their appreciation for the blessing of the gods and beg them to bring them an abundant harvest in the coming year. The fishermen turn on the light on their boats together to pray. The glowing fishing lamps light up and illuminate the Waian Port in the night for three consecutive days. This event attracts many tourists to visit Waian Village and experience this unique “Waian Fishing Light”.
Tourists can come to Waian Sanxian Tower at heights to enjoy the beautiful Waian Port and the entire Waian Village. Also known as Xipu Sanxian Tower, The Waian Sanxian Tower is located on the top of a hill in front of the Waian Village to the southwest of the Wengwan Temple. The three stone towers stand erect on the hill. They sit on square stone bases and their conical bodies are made of stone, too. The towers are about 2 meters high with a diameter of about 1 meter. They have the function of suppressing devils and driving out evil spirits like Shigandang. A basalt stele is embedded in the primary tower.
The “Waian Fake Cannon” in Waian is one of the ten most important historical buildings in Penghu County. During the Second World War, the Japanese army built a fake concrete cannon as a lure for the US bombers to attack. The cannon is built in a low-laying ground on the tableland with trenches connecting to related facilities. The fake cannon has an octangle platform and two barrels. The platform is 5.35 meters wide and the barrels are 6.13 meters in length with a space of 3.16 meters between them. The fake cannon functioned well in luring and deceiving the enemy. This rare and special military installation witnessed the Second World War and reflected the importance of Waian in terms of its strategic geographical location. There is another fake cannon named “Wude Fake Cannon” nearby the old Wude Airport in the south area of Magong. It is estimated that Wude Fake Cannon, Waian Fake Cannon, and Gongbei Fake Tank were built in the same period. They have very special historical value.
