The brick kiln industry in Penghu declined and brick kilns also stopped production or disappeared. In the past, there were 4 brick kiln plants in Penghu, all of which were located in Husi Township.2 of them were in Hongluo; one was in Lintou and the other one was in Jianshan.
We can only understand relevant information by visiting Hongluo Brick Kiln Plant, currently located beside 202 County Highway. The kilns in Hongluo Brick Kiln Plant are climbing kilns, also known as ascending kilns, all of which are made of red bricks. The kilns were built with a slight incline for personnel to perform operations at the upper and lower parts of the kilns with ease.
The plant was constructed with red bricks, and there are a total of 3 climbing kilns, 2 of which are in the south and the other one is in the north. The southern kiln has 17 chambers and the northern kiln has 15 chambers. Each chamber covers an area of about 39.66 to 49.59 square feet and the total length of the chambers is 150 meters. Thus Hongluo Brick Kiln Plant is the largest kiln plant in Taiwan. At its peak, the maximum production of a climbing kiln could reach 450 thousand bricks. Nevertheless, as time flew by and hollow bricks and automatic brick factories from Taiwan became popular in Penghu, Hongluo Brick Kiln Plant eventually closed.
Looking out towards the plant, we can see its ochre and historical exterior with arches and square windows. We can also feel the grandeur of the standing chimney from a distant view of it. The plant belongs to a private owner, and thus tourists visiting the Plant should greet the owner when meeting him.
