Penghu Caiyuan is located southeast of Magong. Caiyuan's inner bay environment is a natural half-closed sea area, and is protected from the effects of typhoons and monsoons from the northeast. The area is free of artificial pollution and perfect for oyster cultivation. In the 1920s, the Japanese people used to cultivate pearls throughout the Caiyuan Fishing Harbor and the Shuanggangzi sea area.
Oyster farming started in the 1970s. Originally, the shoal cutting test breeding method was adopted. After the county government started the coastal area oyster farming promotion plan in 1973, the Japanese shallow sea culture method was adopted by erecting bamboo sheds and hanging the saplings. The deep sea long line culture method has been devised via technical exchanges and experience accumulation.
The deep sea long line culture method enables oysters to grow rapidly and succulent. The markets responded well and the demands have exceeded the supply. As a result, most of the people have invested in oyster farming and engaged in household processing as their sideline businesses, which created Caiyuan's glory.
In 2015, the Ministry of Culture launched the “Village Youth Cultural Action Plan”. Caiyuan community volunteer Shu-Ting Huang participated in the "Penghu Caiyuan Oyster Shell Art Community" plan and won the micro-industry category award. She was the only winner in the entire Penghu area.
