The village lies on the northeast coast in Penghu. In earlier times, Nanliao and Beiliao were collectively referred to as Guibi Port Village. After they were separated from each other, Nanliao developed its fishing industry since it is situated by the sea. At the same time, farming was the main activity in Beiliao due to its inland location. Nanliao Village was nominated for the 2016 Public Construction Golden Quality Award for its renewable environmental improvements and won the Excellence Award.
Since Nanliao Village is not located near the ocean and there were fewer opportunities for development, many villagers emigrated in the early days. Moreover, it was rare to see visitors here because there were no particularly attractive spots. As a result, numerous old buildings in the village have been left unused, while this somehow preserves a traditional Penghu village atmosphere in Nanliao.
Today, many traditional coral stone houses with red tile roofs and stone walls exist, including single-family houses, three-section compounds, and houses for large families. In addition, stone wall gardens, bullock carts and traditional luxury residences are common in the village.
Recently, installation artworks have been used to decorate the village. Several artists utilize floats and fishing equipment to create cute animal paintings in every corner of Nanliao Village. When walking into the village, thousands of colorful floats hanging above lanes surrounded by coral stone buildings come into view. The spot has become a popular checked-in attraction. It is astonishing to see the burning sunlight filtering through the colorful hanging floats while standing beneath them. The bright sunlight makes a sharp contrast with the shadow of the floats, and dappled light and shadows on the ground are just breathtaking.
In recent years, the village has actively promoted village reconstruction and repaired old houses to reproduce historic buildings that represent the village. The village won the “16th Public Construction Golden Quality Award” of the Executive Yuan in 2016 and was selected as one of the “Top 100 Green Destinations” in 2017 and 2018. Once walking in Nanliao Village, we can see stone collages on the walls of houses. These collages illustrate women in Nanliao Village covering their faces and the scene where they are working and are true to life.
The village also focuses on repairing Fu-Ji Fish Stove which Fu-Chi Tai built in 1959. It comprises a cooktop, chimney and salty sauce tank. The space construction plan subsidized the repair in 2012 to showcase the features of fish stoves and allow visitors to understand the traditional stove industry in Penghu.
The early fishing industry in Penghu was prosperous. When sardines were plentiful during summertime, sardines caught in the sea were processed and steamed using fish stoves and then exported to Taiwan and Japan after being air-dried. Such fish processing industry flourished for a while in Penghu. Even though fish stoves are not a tool essential to make a living for people in Penghu anymore, they become a part of the life experience of most of them. Repaired fish stoves enable visitors to experience the historical and traditional cultures in Penghu and allow local elders to recall old memories.
Cowpat Trough was included in the renovation plan. In 2013, villagers made plans for building Cowpat Trough with the subsidy from the Village Regeneration Incubation Project of the Soil and Water Conservation Bureau, Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan to bring back early village life. Cow dung cakes were essential to early farming life. Villagers removed water from collected cow dung, shaped them into sun and air-dried cakes, and then used them as fuel at home. There are cow dung pits and relevant tools used to collect cow dung in early times in Cowpat Trough to allow visitors to understand early village culture and make cow dung cakes on their own.
In addition to the early fishing industry, Nanliao was also a traditional farming village. Therefore, the village promoted the “Smallholder Market” under the space construction plan in 2014 by decorating the market with float installation artworks and paintings. Villagers and the residents living in the neighborhood might sell self-planted fresh vegetables and fruit as well as seafood in the market to encourage chemical-free farming and the reduction of the carbon footprint of food.
