There are two officially-built city god temples in Penghu. They were located in Wenao as it was more developed in the early days. However, due to its limited hinterland and development potential, the Qing court moved Penghu County Hall to Magong. This place became more and more prosperous and constructed Magong Castle along with Magong City God Temple, which is registered as a 3rd-class historic site by the Ministry of the Interior.
During Guangxu's reign, the French military invaded Penghu. The locals come under the army's gunfire while fleeing for safety. They had no choice but to pray to the City God and heavy rain fell right away, resulting in misfiring of the French military’s guns, and the locals dodged a bullet. After a peace agreement was reached between France and China, the Qing court granted another title, “Lin Ying Hou” to the City God to appreciate the miracle that happened in City God Temple. As a result, there is a tablet with the inscription “Grant of the Title Lin Ying Hou” in the center hall. In the back hall hangs another tablet with the inscription “Contributions to Defence” granted by the Guangxu Emperor, and the imperial seal “Treasure from Guangxu” was inscribed on the tablet.
City God Temple faces south and consists of a front hall called Sanchuan Hall, a prayer pavilion and a main from the exterior to the interior. They are connected to the rooms on both sides, creating a courtyard layout. Once entering Sanchuan Hall, the two warning tablets with the inscriptions “Here You Come” and “Too Late for Regret”, respectively, always attract people’s attraction. They were given by a magistrate, Pang-Chi Cheng. There are two inscriptions, “Commendation for Benevolence” and “Punishment for Evil,” on the walls of both side rooms that are dedicated to General Fan and General Hsieh as well as Wenwubantou.
The Penghu County Government launches the “Magong Castle Tour Program”. Visitors can book a reservation online, and Professional tour guides guide them through the Magong Cultural Center and surrounding spots to understand the events that occurred here in the past.
