Niaoyu is the second most populated island of Baisha Township, next to Jibei Island. This is a typical fishing village. The majority of the residents here are fishermen.
From Niaoyu Fishing Pier, you can see a 180-degree no-obstruction view of the seascape.
The east coast of Niaoyu is a large cliff of basalt pillars, while the north coast features onion-shape coral-red gravel basalt rocks with a base of volcanic breccias created by the northeasterly monsoon and erosion of sea waves. The contrast between the
upright
basalt pillars at the east and the graveled surface at the north brings the island highly varied landscape in a scale of grandeur.
Part of Niaoyu is connected with Nanmianguayu by a strip of land below sea level. When the tide ebbs, the land surfaces, creating a unique sight of “drying sea”.
Niaoyu’s land area varies depending on the tidal cycle. It measures 0.265 km2 during high tide and 1.098 km2 during low tide. There is an area of wave-cut bench stretching from the east coast of the island to Nanmianguayu at north, Small Baishayu at west
and
Quzhuayu at south. Typical fringing reefs grow along the edge of the island.
Pengpeng Beach, located at the southwest side of Niaoyu, is a new shoal formed from the sea north of Yuanbeiyu. This stretch of beach around 1,000 meters is now a very popular attraction to visitors.
