Nauyu Castle is a castle constructed using local basalt blocks on Cimei Island. In contrast to regular castle walls, an about 2-story building wall was built by laying black basalt blocks. The castle also features an arch gate and arched colonnade with brackets on columns.
The wall was sturdily built and looks very stately. The arc of the arch gate and facade with colonnades and the blue skyline further demonstrate the artistry and vividness of the castle.
The history of Nauyu Castle traces back to a Chen family in Cimei Island. According to the “Renovation of Nauyu Castle” stone tablet embedded in the inner side of the stone wall of Nauyu Castle, Chin Chen, an ancestor of the family in Cimei Island, moved with his mother from Bazhao Island to Nauyu (ancient name) and lived in “Jianshanjiao” in Qianlong's reign in the Qing Dynasty. He then married his wife with Chang as her last name. After decades of efforts, the family grew and accumulated substantial wealth. The family built Nauyu Castle to defend them against bandits. The whole family lived in the castle and thus its location was called “Chengnei”.
Nauyu Castle is a memorial building built by the Chen family to appreciate the efforts of its ancestors to develop the island. The buildings and land in Nauyu Castle are open to the public for free, allowing it to become a famous landmark on Cimei Island.
