The Erkan Gangquiu Grassland is exposed to the burning sun. It is dry, rains rarely, and is not a good place for bushes. However, the short and wind-resistant plants grow on the tableland around the Erkan settlement. With the neat and emerald plants, local people gave the name Erkan Grassland to this place. The Grassland looks like a soft green felt. The vast glossy grass in summer is pure and clean. In 2002, McDonald's selected Erkan Grassland in its ad and promoted the Grassland’s bleak but “violent and jubilantly dancing wilted grass” under the monsoon in the winter. Tourists can look into the distance from Erkan Grassland and never feel tired.
The Erkan Grassland looks like a European prairie. The American aloe and gaillardia grow here and embellish the grass. Occasionally, some tourists come here and fly kites leisurely at dusk in summer.
Local people ever raised 20 cattle in Erkan during the Japanese Occupies Period. However, due to the emigration of people and fallow of farmland, there are only 1 or 2 cattle on the Grassland. Some local people herd cattle here occasionally, and only at that time can people hear the moo around the Grassland. Some people herd sheep here, too, to make the Grassland full of more vitality. The Gangquiu Grassland covers an area from Dakeng Gouding and Cunzaitou to Dagouye columnar basalts. It is not the core business area of local people all the time, but a significant element for the beautiful scenery of Erkan.
