In the middle of the west coastline in Xiyu Township lies Chixi Columnar Basalt. Basalt columns here are especially spectacular and varied. Most of them are dark black and the color becomes closer to brown the further north you go. The basalt columns vary in shape, including vertical, curved, decumbent and inclined columns.
The name, Chixi Rock Waterfall, is given because the water of a fish farm on top of Chixi Columnar Basalt flows down the basalt columns like a waterfall after a train or whenever water is drained from the fish farm. Another point of view says that the curved joints of the basalt columns are like water pouring into the ocean.
The “curved joints” of the “rock waterfalls” create visual effects different from regular “columnar joints”. These rocks “waterfalls” varying in size flow from the cliff. Some of them flow straight down and others flow obliquely.
The landform of Chixi Rock Waterfall consists of a “wave-cut cliff” and a “marine depositional platform”. It is not easily accessible since visitors must walk along the industrial road by the seashore and come across piles of basalt blocks to get to the Waterfall.
Chixi Rock Waterfall extends from Houbizi in Chixi to Niujiaowan in Tachih. However, mass wasting problems have been increasingly serious in recent years, and hence, please watch your step and ensure your own safety while visiting here! 【Recommended stay time】 0.5 hour
