Ken-Shen Hung (1946-), born in Dingwan Village, Huxi Township, Penghu, is a famous Taiwanese contemporary artist in ink painting. After graduated from the Department of Fine Arts of National Taiwan Normal University, he returned to Penghu and taught in Magong Junior High School. A year later, he moved to Kaohsiung, successively teaching in Taren Junior High School, Kaohsiung Senior High School and National Kaohsiung Normal University. He has become an important artist with his modern ink paintings and dedicated himself to modern art movements of southern Taiwan, which makes him influential.
To honor him for his outstanding achievements in art and contributions, the County has set up Ken-Shen Hung Art Museum with a historic building and invited Chiung-Jui Hsiao to be the curator. With “Ken-Shen Hung as an artist,” “Ken-Shen Hung as an art movement advocate,” and “Ken-Shen Hung as an art educator” as the three main topics displayed in the opening of the art museum, it is hoped that the museum can be an important base of ink painting in Taiwan that continuously promotes the development of contemporary ink painting.
The site was initially the Navy Deputy Commander Office of Penghu Inspection Department, Taiwan County, Taiwan Prefecture, while later changed into Penghu Magistrate Office during the Qing dynasty. In the Japanese colonial period, “Penghu Island Gendarmerie Unit” was organized here. The building was also reconstructed then. The Cultural and Creative Center, Fencing Room, Stable, Japanese-style rooms, etc. nowadays are the structures built at that time.
After World War II, the place was used by the Transportation Service Division of Penghu Defense Command. In 1958, the unit was rearranged as Magong Port Command of Penghu Defense Command.
In 1995, two Japanese-style dormitories were torn down and reconstructed into a two-story structure made of reinforced concrete, which is now the “Dormitory Building” in the back of the park.
In 2002, the Penghu County Government announced that the building was registered as a historic building.
