A great deal of winds and sands and the severe climate are real threats for living in Penghu. In order to resist the unfriendly environment, stone towers were set up as a talisman to avert evil and stop the wind.
Suogang Stone Towers, situated in the north of the old village, include South Tower (Wu Tower) and North Tower (Zai Tower). They are about 3 stories tall, and before the stone towers were built, the place was originally a little hill viewed as a guardian by the locals. The hill gradually disappeared because of the strong northeast monsoon, and a saying meaning that the sand hill was blown to the port in Shanshuei thus came out. To make up for the impact on the local feng shui caused by the disappearance of the hill, the two huge stone towers were built on the site.
The towers were originally built with black stones, but later changed to a mixed material of black stones, basalts and cement in 1962 during reconstruction. The area that their first story covers is roughly 66 square meters. They were initially a Shigandang piled into seven tiers, but after the reconstruction in 1962, it was changed into nine tiers. Fourteen meters tall, Suogang Stone Towers are the tallest stone towers in Penghu.
