On the hill west to the eastern port in Chihmawan and near Chihma Fishing Harbor in the east of Chihma Village in Xiyu Township lie the ruins of a fort, Wukongding. The name Wukongding is given because there are five portholes on the stone wall of the fort, which were used to overlook the harbor and bay in order to scout enemy movements.
The fort was built in the 14th year of Guangxu's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1888). After constructing Penghu Castle, Hung-Lo Wu, the 90th commander of the naval force stationed in Penghu, (who was from Hefei City, Anhui Province, took office in November in the 13th year of Guangxu's reign and retired after six months and eighteen years of service) built 5 forts in Xiyu, and Chihmawan Fort is one of them.
The ruins cover an area of about 3,000 meters. (Underground) Barracks for station troops curve with the topography of the hill and are about 50 meters. Five square portholes facing northwest were used to overlook the harbor and scout enemy movements offshore. There are stepped trenches at the entrance and exit to have easy accessibility.
Even though the fort has been abandoned, the building is still well-persevered and sturdy. A wooden walkway was built from the foot of the hill all the way up to the top. Beside it stands a pavilion where we can take in the beautiful scenery of Penghu Bay at a glance.
