Shagang Community is located at the northwest side of Huxi Township. The residents are formed by four major ethnic groups (Dingshe, Xiashe, Tudigong and Shuiku). The southeast side of the village harbors the major farming area and the east, north and
northwest
sides are open to the sea with a large band of inter-tidal zone, making it an ideal locale for fishery.
Among the three major islands of Penghu, Shagang is the most unique district outside of downtown Magong. Shagang Village is formed by three settlements: Shagang (including Dingshe and Xiashe; Dingshe is also called Shagangtou - head of Shagang), Tudigongqian
and Shuiku. The most interesting sight in this village is the simple, unadorned coral stone mansions built in clusters. This village has the highest density of ancestral halls, yet it is the only village without ceremonial organizations we called “Jiatou”
in the whole of Huxi Township.
The cluster of Shagang Mansions forms a unique community. One of the most unique structures is the Chen Mansion at No. 56 Shagang Village. This is a traditional Penghu house with one tier and two rooms at each side-wing built with coral stones, but the front
gate (facade) features sweeping roof, which is a status symbol indicating a residence of a government official. This house is linked with the neighboring No. 54 and 55 into an extended block. The grandeur still shines through even though the latter two complexes
have been altered.
Shagang Village is nestled between Dingwan and Zhongxi Villages of Huxi Township, neighboring Dingwan at southwest and Dongshi at south. The village opens to the sea at east and north, looking out to Xixi and Hongluo Villages (east) and Yuanbei Village of
Baisha
Township (north).
