Shetou Hill lies on the small peninsula sticking out from the north end of Fongguewei in the south west of Penghu and guards Magong Bay together with Jinguitou on the northern coast. The shape of the hill is like a python lying down in the sea, and thus it is called “Shetou Hill”. After climbing up Shetou Hill, you will overlook the bay and look out over Magong City as well as Szjieuyu and Penghu Inner Bay.
Shetou Hill used to be a key military area. In 1622, the Dutch established a military fort here, the oldest fort constructed by the Western in Taiwan. The ruins of the fort were designated as a national historic monument in 2001.
At the southeast side of Shetou Hill stand a memorial to killed French soldiers and a monument to the sunk Japanese cruiser Matsushima. They were erected at different times. The former is a memorial to French soldiers who died from epidemics during the French occupation of Magong Island. The latter is a memorial stone erected by the Japanese government to commemorate the officers and soldiers killed in the explosion of the magazine of the Japanese cruiser Matsushima anchored near Magong Port.
Through the planning and renovation by the Penghu County Government, Shetou Hill in Fongguei, Penghu County, is designated as the ruins of the ancient battlefield. Standing on the historic military site is like watching the battles that occurred on Shetou Hill during wartime. The hill has become one of the scenic spots for tourists.
