Coral stone house is the most unique symbol of Penghu’s heritage. Yongcheng Mansion is a three-tiered mansion located in the Hejie Community. This mansion was once a large 48 partition complex formed by three rows with two-room side-wings and eight blocks at
its high time.



Built in the 1640’s, this large mansion was expanded over time as the family grew in both size and wealth.

At its peak, these eight blocks housed over 100 residents. The family’s well-known wealth was brought by its grocery shop, Yongcheng Store. The huge complex forms a community of its own in Hejie Village. The locals called it the Yongcheng Tribe.



Starting from end of the 1960’s, the glamour of these eight blocks began to dwindle. Still, part of this glorious structure remains a witness to the history and art of Penghu’s coral houses.



Masonry window frames, plain or patterned, were preferred choices for Penghu’s traditional houses. Structurally, they form coherence with the wall texture and strong resistance to the weathering power of harsh sea winds. This is why many window frames are well-preserved
after the houses collapsed.



A row of coral stone wall is found behind the house. This is the defense structure against the strong northeasterly wind. The three openings on the walls are conveniently designed to allow observation of boats and tides.
