Old Banyans of the Port stands at the square in front of the Paoting Temple, located at the intersection of Penghu Aquarium on No. 203 Line in Neian Village, Baisha Township, Penghu County. In addition to the Tongliang Great Banyan, the old banyans here on the way to North Ring, right before turning to Penghu Aquarium, have lots of stories too.
Each of the two sides of Paoting Temple has an old banyan that provides broad leafy shade. The tree branches stretch out to the two sides of the banyans as it’s hard for trees to grow tall due to the strong northeast monsoon in Penghu, and the aerial roots climb onto the cement braces and tangle wildly.
The aerial roots descend, go deep into the ground and become new trunks, creating a natural sunshade after a while. Summer chairs and deck chairs are provided under the trees to make here a comfortable place to enjoy the coolness and have a chat. When passing by the temple during the journey, welcome to come and take a rest or worship the god.
The banyans were grown around the Qing dynasty, and have been standing here for over a hundred years so far, they are the second oldest banyans in Penghu. Since they stand on the two sides, they are also called “Lover Tree.” These two trees embrace Paoting Temple as if protecting the temple from wind and rain. The place is also regarded as a good spot for the elderly to play chess, for the kids to have fun, or for people to chit-chat.
