Wadong Village was callcalled “Wadong Pier Tribe” in during the Qing Dynasty and “Wadong Township” or “Wadong” in the Japanese era. It was officially named Wadong Village in the Republic era.
Ancestors of Wadong took prominent imperial positions in both Ming and Qing Dynasties and owned tens of large ships, which sailed between Guangdong and Fujian for trade. At the time, prominent or wealthy families built their houses with sweeping roofs decorated
with glazed tiles. The glazed tiles are called “Wadong” in the southern Chinese language and over time this “Wadong” became the name of this place.
The village is preserved as significant historic resources. Oxes, ox carts and traditional coral stones paint the leisurely scenery of the rustic countryside.
Chang Pai-Wan, a merchant from Baishan Township of Penghu, has an intriguing legacy. One of his descendants was commended by Qing Emperor Yongzheng and bestowed a title in the second year of Yongzheng Period. The plaque of bestowment is now preserved at the
Chang Mansion in Baisha Township. It is the only bestowment plaque in Penghu under private ownership.
Three generations of the Chang family were bestowed the title “General Huaiyuan” by Qing emperors. Many precious artifacts have been preserved. This is the only house of scale seen in Penghu.
