The construction of Dongcheng Camp (Xiyu Western Fortress) started on April 25th, 1903 (the 36th year of Meiji’s reign) and was completed on October 25th, 1904 (the 37th of Meiji’s reign), which was a coastal defense project. There are 3 gun mounts and 6 gun platforms in the fortress. It was one of the most important island fortresses in the Japanese colonial rule and has now become an attraction of great potential in Xiyu Township.
There are several military historic sites, including Xiyu Main Ammunition Depot (Defensive Copper Wall Ammunition Depot), vaulted ammunition depots, cave depots for smokeless powder and gun powder, the gun platforms of Xiyu Eastern Fortress, the attack base at Tongbitou, tunnels and forts, Tungtaihupen Camp (Xiyu Eastern Fortress), Dongcheng Camp (Xiyu Western Fortress). These historic military forts, fortresses, and ammunition depots create uniqueness to the military landscape.
The forts, underground tunnels and fortresses in the camp constructed in the Japanese colonial rule are transformed into parking lots, public toilets and other public facilities in Dongcheng Camp. With local military ruins, history and culture as features, the guidance service related to life on the battlefield will be provided to give tourists a brand-new impression on Xiyu.
