Mudou Island is 7km away from Jibei Island, which is in the south of it. It is a tiny island with a perimeter of 843 meters and an area of only 0.0244 square kilometers. The island is famous for its Mudou Island Lighthouse, and nobody lives there except the lighthouse workers.
Mudou Island, sitting in the north of Jibei Island, is the northmost island of the Penghu Archipelago. It got its name because its shape looks like an eye.
It is also said that its early name was “Muodou Island” as the shape of its quadrangular basalt mesa looks like an ink line tool in carpentry, but was then changed into “Mudou Island” due to the difference of pronunciation. Since it sits in the northmost location of the Penghu Archipelago, it is also called “North Island.”
Wrecks frequently happened in the past because of the submerged reefs, so Mudou Island Lighthouse was built during the Guangxu reign period in the Qing dynasty to guide the direction for people on the boats. The lighthouse has a history of more than a hundred years. The 40-meter-tall Mudou Island Lighthouse, with its body in alternate black and white, stands straightly on the black brown rocky ledge and radiates grandeur.
Mudou Island Lighthouse is the first lighthouse that the Japanese built in Penghu Archipelago when Japan took over Taiwan.
With a height of 39.9 meters, Mudou Island Lighthouse is the tallest pig iron lighthouse of Taiwan. It is also the tallest pig iron lighthouse in the Far East, and is lived on by the lighthouse keeper.
The water intake is built on the inside of the lighthouse to bring the rainwater from rooftop catchments of the lighthouse and the dormitory into the tower. This design makes the tower the sole lighthouse in Taiwan that has its water intake of the cistern built in the interior.Currently, no electricity flows on the island. The electricity for the operation of the lighthouse is generated by only three power generators.
In 2001, Mudou Island Lighthouse was voted as one of the top ten historic buildings in Penghu during the Voting of the Penghu Historic Buildings!
