Xiaomenyu is located north of Xiyu (Fisherman Island) with a dimension of 0.5121 km2. During high tide, it becomes a standalone island. It is also known as “the pearl of Houmen Channel” for its shape and proximity to the rushing Houmen Channel. A later development,
named Xiaomen Bridge (the small Penghu bridge), linked Xiaomenyu to Xiyu Island. This island has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Penghu, completed with a car park and walkway around the island. A path at the east side of Xiaomen Village
leads to an opening between basalt cliffs, which looks like a gateway with side walls leading to the village. In the old times, this path was the main access for residents of the village, and people began to call this village Xiaomen Village and the island
Xiaomenyu (small gate island).



Siaomenyu islet is a typical mesa, and this feature makes it an epitome of the whole Penghu landform. Its special natural scenery is not only a good spot for sightseeing and recreational activities, but also the best material for education.
